Lights and Steps
Palm pressed to the pedestrian button
He feels the metronomic blip blip blip
A warning to cease one’s step
He waits for the lights to change
And permission to proceed
Red turns to green
The button vibrates its urgency
He turns
And walks the other way

The spotlight is an all-seeing eye
Unlidded, unrelenting, unforgiving
Pointing out your faults
For public discussion
The spotlight is me
Towards Home
He rounds the bases
Four stepping stones
Four points of the compass
Four corners of the world
Four seasons in one day
Four aces (and a joker)
And the final step

Germination
In a tie-dyed dress
The colour of sunflowers
She spins anti-clockwise
and blooms.
Dizzy, she drops.
The bloom folds
In hope of reversing
the day.
Thus, on February 1, Post It Note Poetry commences.
The premise is simple: for the 28 days of February, write a poem on a post it note, take a photo of it and post it on twitter with the hash tag #postitnotepoetry. If you want, post it to your blog, too.
This year I am combining Post It Note Poetry with micropoetry (a maximum of 128 characters, excluding the hash tag). You can see my recent micropoetry posts here on the blog under the Ars Poetica category.

In Roiling Waves
In the shallows
my roiling feet
send sediment clouds
of volcanic eruptions.

To create you must first listen.
listen to your heart, your mind, your soul; the rhythm of your life and the rhythm of nature.
when you have learned to listen, you will have the power to speak with authority.
Understand your creativity is not solely your singular wisdom and insight. It is the culmination of living in the village; learning the traditions and skills of the elders. And it is expected you will continue the heritage by passing it on to those who come after you.

Creativity is not about your cleverness and ingenuity as an artist with pen, brush or camera. It is about telling your story effectively in your chosen media; for it to find its way into the heart and mind of the reader, viewer or listener. It is to change their world that you create.

In this age of the immediate and the temporal, creativity that abandons the sanctity of tradition becomes superficial and disposable. Creativity is not beholden to tradition yet is informed by it, understanding its origins and genesis. Honouring tradition gives you permission to stand on the shoulders of your predecessors.
In the crafting of a single sentence, or the application of the brush to the canvas or in the taking of a single image that an idea has its genesis and the stifling sense of creative depression can be lifted.
